Pocket Website Cookies FAQ

What cookies are used on the Pocket website?

The Pocket website utilizes three categories of cookies.

Necessary Cookies

These cookies are necessary for our website to function and to support our business. They cannot be switched off. For example, we use them to manage your login state, and our ad partners use them to display ads and measure impressions and clicks. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but this may cause parts of the site to not work properly. These cookies do not store any personally identifiable information and unless Targeting Cookies are enabled, ads are non-personalized.

Analytics Cookies

We place these cookies on your device to help us understand how users engage with our website and product. For example, we use Google Analytics and other tools to understand which Pocket webpages are popular. We also place these cookies on your device to remember your account preferences and language settings.

Targeting Cookies

Some Pocket web pages have ads. If you choose, Pocket’s ad partners will place targeting cookies on your device to personalize the ads you see here and on other websites.

If you play a YouTube video on Pocket, YouTube may place cookies on your device which can be used for personalization.

Why does Pocket ask me to confirm my choice regarding cookies when I’m visiting the site?

Pocket uses cookies to perform actions such as remembering your login information, language preferences, measuring site performance, and other functionality. Some of Pocket’s ad partners use cookies on Pocket Discover pages to measure ad impressions and clicks.

If you choose to allow targeting cookies, those ad partners will also place targeting cookies on your device to personalize the ads you see on Pocket and on other websites. And, if you play YouTube videos on Pocket and choose to allow targeting cookies on your device, YouTube may place cookies on your device which can be used for personalization. If you do not consent to targeting cookies, ads will not be personalized.

By default, Pocket sets necessary and analytics cookies, and disables targeting cookies until you consent to them. You always have the choice to allow or disallow analytics and targeting cookies on Pocket from the Cookie Preferences tool. To access the Cookie Preferences tool, click the “Cookie preferences” link in the footer on Pocket’s website:

What information does Pocket share with advertisers when I allow Pocket’s ad partners to set targeting cookies?

Pocket does not share personal information with advertisers, regardless if you opt-in to allow our ad partners to set targeting cookies or not. By accepting targeting cookies, your ads will be more personalized on Pocket and on other websites.

Disabling targeting cookies will not remove advertisements from Pocket’s website. To remove ads completely, Pocket users can subscribe to Pocket Premium, which provides an ad-free experience when visiting Pocket’s website and includes several additional features.

How can I view and manage the cookies that I allow when visiting Pocket’s website?
